Flood Update: Greater Kruger Region, January 2026

Author:

The Greater Kruger region has experienced significant rainfall and flooding due to a low-pressure system moving inland from Mozambique. These systems, which form over warm ocean waters, carry large amounts of moisture and release heavy, sustained rainfall as the air rises and cools over land. The recent weather has caused rivers to overflow and low-lying areas to flood, affecting roads, bridges, and park infrastructure.

Although the heaviest rains have now passed, the situation remains fluid. Visitors are strongly advised to check current road, lodge, and gate access with SANParks, lodges, or local authorities before traveling, as conditions may change at short notice.

Airport Access

Hoedspruit Eastgate Airport (HDS) serves as a key gateway to the northern and central parts of the Kruger region. While the airport remains operational, surrounding roads may still be affected by flooding or wet conditions. Travelers are advised to confirm both flight schedules and road accessibility before departure.

Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (KMIA) provides access to the southern and central parts of the Kruger ecosystem. Access routes may be temporarily disrupted by flooding, and passengers should check flight statuses in advance. Airport teams are actively monitoring infrastructure to maintain safe arrivals and departures.

Greater Kruger Private Game Reserves Lodge Access

Many lodges and safari camps remain temporarily closed due to inaccessible roads. This includes properties in Sabi Sand and Timbavati/Klaserie, such as Singita, Silvan, Arathusa, Chitwa Chitwa, Elephant Plains, Tanda Tula, Kambaku, Ngala Safari, and those in the Pafuri area, are also affected.

A number of lodges remain open, though some may require 4×4 access or pick-up arrangements. These include Tangala, Umkumbe via Newington Gate, Londolozi and MalaMala via Newington Gate, Lions Sands River and Ivory, Walkers, Mjejane, Savanna, and Nyati.

Travelers should contact their safari specialist to confirm accessibility before traveling.

Kruger National Park Access

In the park itself, northern areas remain closed due to damaged roads, bridges, and infrastructure. A gate quota systemhas been implemented at Malelane, Numbi, and Paul Kruger gates to manage visitor traffic safely. Essential vehicles and airport transfers with proof of a valid flight ticket are allowed through Paul Kruger Gate. Meanwhile, the Skukuza to Phabeni route and Orpen Gate remain closed, and fuel stations inside the park may be affected, so visitors should fuel up before entering.

Currently, the only open gates are Malelane, Numbi, and Paul Kruger, while all northern gates and some central routes remain closed until conditions improve.

Travel Advice

Visitors should remain flexible and prioritize safety. Confirm bookings, and road conditions before departure.

The Greater Kruger region is gradually recovering from the floods, but conditions remain dynamic, so staying informed is essential for a safe and enjoyable safari experience.
