The Pantanal - Brazil

About The Pantanal

About the Pantanal Nestled in the heart of Brazil (with extensions into Bolivia and Paraguay), the Pantanal is the world’s largest tropical wetland and largest freshwater wetland ecosystem on Earth—an immense, seasonally flooded landscape roughly the size of Washington State that remains remarkably well-preserved, with over 80% of its native vegetation intact and protected status as a UNESCO World Heritage site and Ramsar Wetland of International Importance. What makes it truly special is its unparalleled accessibility to wildlife: open savannas, rivers, and lagoons allow for incredibly reliable, close-up sightings of one of the planet’s highest concentrations of animals—home to the densest jaguar population anywhere (with unique water-loving behaviors), giant otters, caimans, capybaras, hyacinth macaws, and more than 650 bird species, alongside hundreds of fish, mammals, and plants. The Pantanal holds a special place in our hearts at Wandering Thru: this pulsing, living canvas of wetlands transforms dramatically with the seasons, offering front-row seats to nature at its most dynamic and immediate in one of Brazil’s most untouched and biodiverse wild spaces.

Our approach is simple: we craft fully personalized safaris tailored to what excites you most—whether focused boat-based jaguar tracking, horseback rides across the plains, or photography-centric days. We seamlessly add on other Brazilian highlights like Amazon lodges, Iguazu Falls thrills, or Rio’s energy, turning one journey into a complete South American odyssey.

Best Time to Travel

June - October

July–October (dry season) is our favorite window, as water recedes and wildlife gathers at predictable spots for incredible sightings. June–December also delivers strong birdlife and lush scenery.
